Not On Twitter? Why Not?
Thousands of people join Twitter every single day yet when I ask around my group of friends to see who has joined the social networking giant hardly any of them are on there. Further to this when I look at the ones that do have profiles there are hardly any updates yet when I sign into Facebook everyone is constantly updating their status, what gives?
The fact is that most of my friends are still at university (the layabouts) so Twitter is something they don’t understand or have the time for. This is the problem with a lot of people feel like this and don’t understand what Twitter is all about. Here are some of the reasons you should be on the network.
Contacts
Yes there are other networks out there like LinkedIn that are out there just for people to make contacts but Twitter is just so much more than that. When I am not working (very rarely) I am blogging on my personal site (mostly Disney stuff) and I have met a lot of people through Twitter that are just as passionate about it as I am. This has actually led to several of my contacts asking me to write on their site and of course from an SEO point of view that is a lovely link back for me.
The way to gain serious contacts is to write your Bio and have an image to match. My bio clearly states I am an SEO but Florida and Disney fan hence why the majority of my followers are either SEO or Disney fans.
These contacts build up over time so that when you post something they will click through onto your side and give it a read which in the case of a client can bring massive brand awareness and traffic.
Information
If an SEO tells you they know everything there is to know about Search Engine Marketing then they are a liar. (yeah, I went there) No decent SEO will ever admit to knowing it all and it is because the industry is always changing. For industries like SEO and for hobbies like Gaming you will find Twitter is perfect because people are always sharing new information and are open for questions. It is surprising how many questions people are willing to answer on Twitter.
Business
Long gone are the days of people updating their profiles with what they had for breakfast, Twitter is fast becoming a very business oriented platform with more and more companies using it to build brand and gain more customers. Building trust on Twitter is certainly something I would recommend as once you have loyal customers they are there for good. It would be a bad idea to ignore the customers you could potentially have sitting on Twitter.
Final Points
Gaining a large amount of followers shouldn’t be important but the amount of contacts that will do you favours and read your content and buy your products is where the importance lies. I would much rather have 50 people that love what I do than 10,000 that are there because I am following 20,000.
