10 Things You Need to Know Before Using Airtime.com
Airtime is the new social media platform vying for your attention, allowing you to chat via video to both friends on Facebook and pairing you with other people around the globe with the same interests! Here is everything you need to know before you log on!
1. No Download Needed
Unlike other video calling software, you don’t have to download any software to use Airtime. All you need is a computer with a webcam and a microphone. Luckily a large proportion of computers being released already include these. Otherwise you can buy them cheaply online. Easy!
2. Facebook Login.
There are no huge forms to fill in, no decisions about your new username, and no worries trying to think of a yet another password that you can remember! Airtime uses your login information from Facebook which means everything is already set up for you! You do have to have a Facebook account to access the service but most people using Airtime will already have this.
3. Share YouTube videos and watch together
One of the coolest features of Airtime is that you can watch YouTube videos together! You will be able to still see your friend on the screen at the same time as you are watching a new hilarious video you have found!
4. Can I use my iPad?
Unfortunately, Airtime doesn’t currently support any of the mobile or tablet platforms, meaning that you will need a desktop or laptop. I wouldn’t be surprised if the ability to use Airtime on other services was released in the future though. Watch this space.
5. Can I leave a message?
Not everyone you want to speak to is going to be available all the time, so if you try and ring your friend and they don’t answer, you can leave a video message for them to watch later!
6. Share your interests.
Once you have started a conversation with someone you can see what shared interests you have! Click the Airtime logo in the centre to see what you both like! Maybe you have a shared love of a certain film or band? This feature is great as a conversation starter.
7. Keep your privacy
When chatting to someone new, you at first appear an anonymous. If you want to during a conversation, you can click ‘add’ which will reveal your name to the other participant.
8. Badges!
Airtime uses a badge reward system to enrich your experience. If you are one of the first million people to use the service, you will be given a ‘Founder’ badge. There are many rewards that you can collect that add a little bit of competition into the service and keep you coming back for another chat.
9. Applause!
If you have had a nice old chinwag with someone new, you can click the applause button to show your appreciation. When meeting new people, applause you receive will count towards badges.
10. How to look your best
Because Airtime is a visual medium, you need to make sure that what people see on screen is representing who you really are. Having a shot set up with some of your possessions in your background can give people clues to your personality and interests. You also need to make sure that you have some decent light, otherwise people might think that you are living in a cave!
Airtime looks set to join the elite ranks of other online applications such as Skype, MS Lync, Trello and Pinterest in the ways that we interact with people. So turn on your webcam and join in the conversation.
