Getting To Grips With A Long Term SEO Campaign

If you have done any kind of research related to SEO, you will know by now that you cannot merely carry out a piece of work over the course of a few weeks or months and see powerful, long-lasting results.  Of course, how you decide to approach your own SEO campaign will depend on your industry and the resources you have to hand.

Whatever course of action you choose, keeping in mind that we’re talking in terms of years rather than months when it comes to SEO will ensure that you’re realistic at every step. How can you ensure that you build an SEO campaign that works for the long term rather than merely being something that is a flash in the pan that you give up one at the end of month one?

One Step at a Time

The trick for getting a great SEO campaign up and running is to plan everything in minute detail. Furthermore, the more you can think in terms of ‘one step at a time,’ the greater your chances of success will be.

Think about all of the things that you might do as part of an SEO campaign.

  • · Optimization in terms of layout and design
  • · Optimization of titles, descriptions, and content with keywords
  • · Carry out on-going research to ensure you’re targeting the right keywords
  • · Analyse the impact of your activities on a regular basis
  • · Seek out listings on business directories
  • · Pursue a social media presence
  • · Manual link building

You probably don’t need us to tell you that if you’re new to SEO, trying to do all of that at once isn’t going to leave you with much time to manage your business.

If you can break all of this down across a period of a year or more, you’ll have much greater success. This is what we would do.

Early Days

We strongly recommend that the first months of any campaign are dedicated to getting your on-site SEO where you want it to be. Yes, you can do the other things, but only on a top line basis. You might spend three to six months digging and researching the best keywords for driving relevant traffic to your site, and if it takes that long, then so be it.

Blog, get yourself on Google+ Local, and establish a Facebook presence, too, but put the majority of your efforts into getting your on-site SEO correct. Once you have completed this big piece of work, the continual updates you need to apply in this area will be relatively easy.

As Time Goes By

Once you’re happy with your on-site efforts, which will likely be at least six months down the line, you can start to focus on your content marketing, as well as starting to up the ante in terms of social media and link building.

The great thing with having already completed your on-site optimization is that you’ll be getting more organic traffic and natural links already. A site that starts to increase its link building later on in its early life will also be seen as more natural and credible in the eyes of Google; targeting this on day one is likely to see you be labelled a spammer more than anything else.

Long Term SEO

Once you reach this stage, your SEO activities will feel a part of your everyday workload, and will probably come natural to you. By building up your SEO activities in the right way, you will find the whole process easier to complete, and see the biggest benefits to your search ranking and organic traffic moving forward.
