Is It Really a New Decade?
No doubt you heard the countdown to the New Year and the supposedly new decade. However some of the math being used is faulty to say the least. Technically the new decade doesn’t start until 2011. In all seriousness, the New Millennium didn’t start with year 2000, it started with 2001. Remember in 1st grade when we were taught to count, we counted 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Never do we count from 1 to 9 and claim that to be a set of ten. So why do we start the new decade from 2010 and the new millennium from 2000?
It might seem trivial but when we put such mathematical equations into a computer it will spit it out at you. Now I’m not saying counting the new decade from a 0 instead of a 1 will cause the next Y2K scare, but I’m sure if you ask any computer technician, they will undoubtedly tell you that the computer will not accept 2010 as the start of a new decade.
So let’s not break out the Champaign too early to celebrate the start of a non-existent decade shall we?
