AOL: Trying Hard to Get Silicon Valley Cred
Look who’s trying to hang out with the cool Silicon Valley startup kids.
AOL has a new Palo Alto, CA workspace (395 Page Mill, Palo Alto, CA 94306 and former headquarters of Agilent Technologies) and hopes that this new space infuses entrepreneurial energy to the company. AOL is hoping to keep on top of the latest developments, so it can be more proactive in acquisitions.
The most famous tenant in this building is SSE Labs, a Stanford affiliated organization that operates a startup incubator. Some of SSE Labs most well known projects are:
* Black Swan Solar (Summer ’10), founded by a Stanford sophomore, has already raised its first round and is just about to close its second. It has also been featured in Inc as one of America’s Coolest College Startups.
* Game Closure (Spring ’11) has been profiled in TechCrunch and has become one of the Valley’s hottest early stage startups with all the top investors and social gaming companies in the valley banging down their doors.
* Motion Math (Summer ’10) has released an award-winning learning game and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Wired and TechCrunch
* ThinkBulbs (Summer ’10, now an Entrepreneur-In-Residence) was recently acquired by Megatasty Labs (cofounded by Hot Or Not founder, Jim Young).
* 6Dot (Fall & Spring ’11) has won numerous design awards for its innovative Braille labeller and is getting ready for commercialization.
Other tenants of the AOL building are Graphic.ly, a digital comic book maker, and Impermium, a developer of anti-spam software.
