Charity Used to Begin at Home But Now It’s Mostly Social

The old saying that charity begins at home sort of still rings true – that is if social media users are at home when they open their wallets. There is no surprise in the fact that 2010 was a tough year for many families thanks to the recession and massive job loss. Charitable organizations were reporting a struggle to keep up with the demand for basic need items. But thanks to social media, the struggle wasn’t as tough as it could have been.

Research is showing the social media users are the most active supporters of charitable causes and non-profit organizations. Because of the available technology and popularity of social media sites, consumers seem to be more aware of the pressing issues and are able to make instant donations online. Organizations are using social media marketing to fill people in on current issues around the world and in users own communities. Non-profit charities are also finding more volunteering efforts from social media users who can get instant access to open opportunities at any number of locations.

On the whole, charities and non-profits have been actively participating in the social media world to get their cause some more attention since many lack the resources for big media coverage. Also, blogging has increased awareness to many more causes than in years past. Not only are charity representatives able to express views through blogging forums, one-third of Internet users are regular bloggers about political, social, charitable, and personal issues. Those blog posts help spread the word to the world what causes need attention and financial help.
