Really Mr. Zuckerburg? Trademarking the Word “Face”?
Mark Zuckerburg and the Facebook team are on the fast track to getting a trademark on the word ‘face’. The word ‘book’ however, is proving to be a bit more of a challenge.
The word ‘book’ has already been claimed by an online company called myeworkbook.com. Their claim on the word is as a result of their business which is “an online community for registered users to participate in discussions, get feedback from their peer, form virtual communities , and engage in social networking featuring educational purposes”.
A trademark has been commonly known for a recognizable symbol like the Nike ‘swoosh’ for example, words and phrases. Having the word ‘face’ trademarked may pose a problem to the some 89,000 domain name owners that contain the word ‘face’ in their site name.
In addition, there are famous ‘faces’ that could put up a challenge to the trademark of the word ‘face’. Take for example Apple’s video conferencing service, Facetime, may require a name change should Facebook get their way.
And if you think you can start a web site that has a “like” function Facebook will knock on your door. They have a trademark on the word “like” and don’t expect to be able to post to a “wall”, Facebook has that trademark as well.
