Social Networking Sites Lifeline For Haitian Earthquake Relief
Social networking is proving to be the fastest and best means of communication between earthquake-ravaged Haiti and the rest of the world. Both Facebook and Twitter have launched campaigns to help the relief efforts in the devastated country following the massive January 12 quake.
Both the American and Canadian Red Crosses reported huge increases in monetary donations and rescue teams have been able to mobilize quickly and better assess the damage as more users post pictures of the destruction on their profiles.
Thousands around the world have still been unable to establish contact with relatives living in Haiti. Again, social networking has proved to be invaluable, as both Facebook and Twitter have been abuzz with live photos and video, status reports, and blatant pleas for help as rescuers try to locate survivors and reunite families.
Even with limited communication to and from the country and spotty Internet access, some families have been able to get word on their loved ones. Media professionals predict that the speed and efficiency of the rescue efforts spearheaded through these sites will undoubtedly change the perception of social networking forever.
