The Most Promising Social Media Startups for 2010 – So Far!
Determining the most promising social media ventures is very subjective. True, it is possible to deduce the potential (to an extent) based on the track record of the production and marketing team.
However, any “dark horse” can receive an unexpected cash injection along the way, or simply take off among the public. After all, how many people would have believed that Twitter would become as huge as it has if you predicted it at the time of launch?
That said, here are a few very promising candidates – just how promising exactly will eventually be determined by the users!
In no particular order:
1. Aloqa – this service allows users to share and vote for their favorite local hotspots, events and activities. Any cell phone user will be able to see what others recommend in and around the area – without having to guess if anything will be a worthwhile experience or not.
2. Plancast – share your plans with the rest of the world – short or long term plans. Additionally, you can import updates on the plan from Facebook and Twitter. On the one hand it will give business people a platform to launch new ventures or expansions, and on the other it will allow others to join in, or support, your personal plans.
3. Blippy – a network that allows you to share information about what you buy, and discuss purchases. While this may not seem like much to rave about, consider this: First, people often base their decisions upon the recommendations made by friends, and second, there is the whole concept of “keeping up with the Jones’s” – so if “everybody else” is buying it, many people will be buying stuff just to be “in”. Sadly, this is likely to result in financial peer pressure for many people – but it is likely to be popular nonetheless. Additionally, it is likely to become a powerful marketing tool for those companies sponsoring endorsements from stars – since the popularity of their products will now be broadcast.
4. Wildfire – a social marketing platform for companies who wish to engage in social media marketing. It promises to be a potent tool, capable of integration with popular networks, and promises to keep up to date with all new applications and resources which may be of use to their clients.
5. Nextstop – a community where people share the experiences they enjoyed – from all over the world. It is bound to be popular among those looking for some new travel ideas, as well as people who want to be sure of an enjoyable travel experience. With Nextstop you can draw from the experience of others, and provide your own as a resource for others to base their decisions on.
6. Rippol – let’s face it: Facebook is an incredible tool – but it can get to be too much. Rippol allows you to see what your friends are watching and have enjoyed. This way, you will easily be able to see what is really popular and what simply clogs up your Facebook wall.
7. Posterous – a way to share your thoughts, but when you need more than just a few characters or lines to do so. Interestingly enough, new posts are made via email – so there will probably be a good number of good jokes and stories forwarded to Posterous. As such, it is likely to become quite popular and is already making rounds in the blogosphere.
Of course, there is always a “dark horse” somewhere in the wings – usually surprising us beyond all expectations. The Internet has proven to be a fast-paced, fluid, constantly evolving realm. However, these seven concepts may very well be worth watching over the next year or so.
Great information. Just an FYI – you have the wrong link up for Nextstop. When you click on it, you go to Rippol.
Great information – thank you!
