Twilight Scam Taking Bite Out of Social Media Users
While the social media world is full fun, safe information connecting fans to the Hollywood things they love, there is also the serious threat from hackers and cons who insist on corrupting even the safest sites with virus and identity theft tools.
The latest scourge to hit the social media world is the Twilight: Breaking Dawn ‘game’ that is floating around cyberspace and Facebook. The virus scam is contracted when you receive a tag from a fellow friend’s photo collection. There are also links directly to the so-called game.
Users unknowingly click on the link and get prompted by Facebook to switch to a non-secure, or http connection. Once you switch to the non-secure link, you are opening the door for attack. You’ll be invited to play the Twilight game but the virus will ‘like’ the game page for you without authorization and post information to your Wall to encourage your friends to click and continue the spread of the virus.
Users who continue to participate in the ‘game’ will eventually be asked to authorize a Facebook App which leads to a questionnaire where your personal information will be requested.
Due to the popularity of the movie series and the Twi-Hard fan following, it appears the virus is continuing to spread and there is little users can do to extricate themselves once the damage is done.
