US Homeland Security to Utilize Social Media for Terrorist Concerns
The United States Department of Homeland Security has grasped the advantages of social media broadcasting and have plans to begin utilizing various social media platforms to announce threats of national concern starting April 27.
In the past, the Department of Homeland Security used a color-coded graph to issue terror warning affecting the United States. Now, they plan to implement a system employing only two levels of threat – ‘Elevated’ and ‘Imminent’. The warnings will be issued through Facebook and Twitter to all users. However, the information will only be provided for a limited time and if the government feels there is a concern of exposing US security secrets, no threat warnings will be posted at all.
The posting on Twitter and Facebook will only occur once state, federal and local authorities have been issued an alert. The website for the Department of Homeland Security does not issue any other information regarding how the threats and national warnings would be done through the social media sites.
While it is certainly an efficient way of reaching those who need to know, it brings about many questions concerning just who will be watching for this information. The Department of Homeland Security has been working on improving the nation’s security ever since the events of September 11, 2001.
It is a valid project. sirens, tv, and internet to alert the population.
Glad to hear that governments across the country will also be notified so they can respond quickly and increase their surveillance of facilities that might be a target.
